3 Quick Steps to Finding Your Own Productive Stride While Working From Home And Trying to Stay Sane

Working from home isn’t always pretty, even if we’ve been at it for a while now. Time is a blur and space constraints wreak havoc on well-ingrained preferences that you consider to be your ideal working conditions. And while we know nothing is perfect, and that these times are temporary, we wanted to share 3 easy steps that have worked for our clients to help them find their productive stride. We know that the working conditions of today are naturally going to fit better for some than others. Still in considering these suggestions, try to focus less on the constraints of the moment, and instead connect with your interest in staying engaged and productive during this time. Try these 3 steps.

1. Do a diagnostic: We’ve been at this for two weeks...consider what has worked for you so far, and what has been really hard.

  • On days when you hit your productive stride (whatever pace that is for you), what elements were present? Was the space quiet? Did you have a clear to-do list? Were you engaging with colleagues? Working alone?

  • On days when you the thought tying your shoes was a herculean task, consider what was missing. No time for fresh air outside? A scary-long to-do list that left you feeling paralyzed? A cluttered space that prevented you from feeling organized and able?

2. Zero in on your bright spots: Identify the elements that showed up on the good days that can be recreated on an ongoing basis.

3. Create your own structure! I like to make it each day, write it out by hand, and use color.

My Version: Here’s how it worked for me and what my structure looks like:

Step 2: My Bright Spots

I took a look at what may have helped on days when things went well. Here’s what I found my bright spots to be.

3. Create My Structure

After reviewing my diagnosis, and identifying my bright spots, I was able to create a structure that helped me find my productive stride. Here’s what mine looks like.
